Future Journeys

Future Journeys: Past FISH

Past FISH@6 workshops:

Wednesday 5th May 2010 at the Department of Industry & Investment Sydney – INNOVATION CLIMATE CHALLENGE – CLIMATE IN ACTION. Using Sustainable Design principles and Foresight frameworks, we looked at the largest looming climate challenge: the displacement of peoples, culture, communities and homes. Melissa Neighbour from Project Survival Pacific talked about the actions they are taking to safeguard our planet from climate change and to ensure the survival of the nations, people and cultures of the Pacific Islands. Janine Cahill, CEO Future Journeys, identified some of the positive trends, incidents, organisations and people that are pointing to Hope for Sustainable Futures. In the Innovation Lab we explored possibilities in this Climate Challenge and came up with some amazing answers as to what can be done now. The room was filled with excitement for the possibilities we have and would have turned even the most resigned person toward action. Watch a video about the very real situation in Kiribati http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIG7vt1ZPKE and get inspired to take action.

Wednesday 10th March 2010 at the Department of Industry & Investment Sydney – DESIGN FOR THE OTHER 90%. We heard some of the amazing designs people are coming up with for the majority world to make their lives easier. The majority of the worlds designers focus all their efforts on developing products and services exclusively for the richest 10% of the worlds customers. Nothing less than a revolution in design is needed to reach the other 90% (source: Dr. Paul Polak, International Development Enterprises). Khimji Vaghjiani, CEO Solar-Gem Asia spoke about his household solar generator/storage device for the rural communities in developing countries, with innovative technology funding and business models, Greg Campbell, Founder of Society for Responsible Design spoke on sustainable responsible design and Janine Cahill, CEO Future Journeys talked about lessons for the future from the majority world before we got into action in our Innovation Lab.

Wednesday 10th February 2010 at the Department of Industry & Investment Sydney – CO-CREATING SUSTAINABLE FUTURES – THE NEXT STEPS, was an inspiring session for 2010, an Open Innovation approach to creating positive futures with Janine Cahill, CEO Future Journeys.

Thursday 17th December 2009 in The Rocks – CHRISTMAS GIVING GAME, to get into the Christmas cheers, we changed the format of 2009’s last FISH session and ran a prototype of a Game we developed. We started at the Museum of Contemporary Art and made our way through The Rocks exploring creativity and innovation by solving tasks. We ended up on Observatory Hill, enjoying the view and hearing the game outcomes over Pizza and Champagne. The game was developed as a Giving Game raising funds for TEAR Australia and the “World’s most useful gifts”, giving twice – once to a loved one and once to a person in need in the developing world. It was a great way to end a great year!

Thursday 19th November 2009 at The Department of Regional and State Development, Sydney – CSR & SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP, We do know a lot about each other – and also about corporations, government, presidents and prime ministers. This is social media and it requires a new philosophy for seeing the world, for doing our jobs, for running our businesses. It has contributed to an upsurge in Social Entrepreneurship and Corporate Social Responsibility. In a connected world we take responsibility for what is happening and take action to change it. We heard Annie Le Cavalier, CEO of Vibewire Youth Media and Arts talk about the Creative Hub, supporting social entrepreneurs and being one!, Simone Francis, Filmmaker and Intrepid global explorer, talk about her project Nomadic Hands, Ikiam (filmed in Amazon), and her new project in Brazilian favelas (urban slums) and Janine Cahill, CEO Future Journeys on: What is the context for this massive trend? How will it shape our world? Can we avoid dystopian futures? Dare we hope for utopian futures? Can we create them?

Thursday 22nd October 2009 at The Department of Regional and State Development, Sydney – THE FUTURE IS COLLABORATIVE – SHOW US YOUR YIN, we heard about the importance of balancing Yin and Yang values in the complex uncertain world we have created and reflected on what we can do about it. We thought about how can we build feminine values – sharing, collaboration, communication, caring – into our organisations to make them more successful, and to co-create sustainable futures. Our speakers for that night were: Jen Dalitz, founder and SheO of Sphinxx, social commentator, author and speaker focussed on some of the key issues, Matt Jones, founder and CEO of Social Alchemy presented how “Social entrepreneurship has complexity theory written all over it” and Janine Cahill, futurist, innovator, entrepreneur spoke about the importance of flexible, collaborative thinking in the complex uncertain environments in which we find ourselves, and some of the neuroscience of gender. Interestingly the evening’s attendance was balanced in terms of ying and yang and the resulting discussions were highly inspiring to make a change.

Thursday 17th September 2009 at The Department of Regional and State Development, Sydney – THE ART AND SCIENCE OF FORESIGHT, Have you a vision for your company for the next five to ten years? Have you ever given any thought to what the world might be like when you get there. One thing is certain when you look at the future it will NOT be more of today. Led by innovator and futurist entrepreneur Janine Cahill, we explored scenario planning and other foresight techniques in a way to enable us to create products and services that thrive in changing times.

Thursday 18th June 2009 at The Department of Regional and State Development, Sydney – FROM CREATIVITY TO INNOVATION, we (re)discovered the simplicity of being creative and how to turn this creativity into innovation. An inspiring evening with our speakers: Janine Cahill, CEO and Innovation Designer, who shared a combination of creativity and foresight tools, Darren Menachemson on Designing by Recontextualising. This was followed by a workshop on creativity tools facilitated by Deborah Kneeshaw and Janine Cahill.

Thursday 21st May 2009 at The Department of Regional and State Development, Sydney – INNOVATION CLIMATE CHALLENGE, we explored design possibilities with others that will have an impact on carbon.
